Hello...

I have a client asking about a switch that supports VF45 connectors. I have not encountered this kind of connectors before. I assume this is some old technology using fibre? Anybody know anything about these connectors? Any switches support them?

Any place I can read up on this kind of connector?

aren't these old volition switch fiber connectors. i think v45 was used by some 3m (not 3com) switches back when 3m made a line of switches called the volition line. they are worthless by the way. anyways, i think the v45 was their proprietary connector. i am not sure though. thats the only place i have seen them. something about fiber to the desktop push about 5 years ago.

The VF45 fiber connector is part of the Volition cabling system by 3m. You can get more information from

VF45 went out to become the new standard fiber connector, succeeding the bulky and expensive SC-Duplex connector. But it didn't make it. SC is still predominant in fiber cabling and the manufacturers of active components seem to prefer MT-RJ or LC-Duplex for various reasons.

There are (very) few active components with VF45 connectors. But this is not a big problem. If you have Volition cabling in your building, that's fine. You need patch cables anyways to connect your devices. So simply use patch cables with the proper connectors, e.g. VF45 to SC-Duplex, and that's it. There's absolutely no need to have VF45 everywhere.
