How do i reduce the size of PST files located on a file server different from the exchange server? Some of the PST are in GBs.

The pst are not on the exchange servern 5.5
They are on a file server.
i.e when users log in they get (mapped to the ) their mail from the PSTs , located on the (File server)
Problem?
How can i reduce the size of the PSTs automatically just like the way you can reduce the size or limit the size of a mailbox.

To compact PSTs, tools services, select personal folder, properties, compact.

This makes it as small as possible (well, Microsofts idea of it anyway). If you have Exchange, you should not need to use pst files as you can leave the messages in Exchange - then it is easy to set max folder sizes. Do you set each individual to receive mail to their personal folders?

Iam dealing with 300 mailboxes and they alredy have the mailboxes and PSTs
The mailbox size (Total) is about 24gb and thus the Exchange server is overwhelmed.
I have a file server with PSTs and has a capacity of 90gb but i need to do something urgently
Apart from compressing from the client side, is there any other way to do it, so that i can free up the space on the file server

Set the archive facility for the users to 3 months to archive to a new pst file for each user. Check the mailbox size of Exchange by user and tell the major culprits to remove old rubbish.

When you back up, are you removing old data or is the bulk of your Exchange data stuff that was deleted years ago?

24GB for 300 users is 80MB per user.
90GB for 300 users is 330MB per user.

Do they really need to store 400MB each?

I pinned down the culprits earlier so i had actually created some space.
i will however try the archive method

Thanks for the help
