Very slow network problems

Hi, I have been forced into installing Server 2003 on a new server. Since connecting this to the network, all desktops running XP Pro, the network is so slow. It takes nearly 2 mins to open a word document stored on the 2003 server. This is the only server on the network. Any help please

how long does it take to open the same document on the server?

the same document opens almost straight away, also the windows XP users take a lot longer to log on now then before
