my network is very slow but only when users are logging in which takes far too long about 3mins, i check network monitor and perfmon but dont see any excessive network traffic to cause this, rebooted and defraged the server still no change started about 5 weeks ago and is getting worse please help

Not sure if this will help, but we had a similar problem on some 2000 machines (between 3 and 10 minutes of login) which was fixed by disabling the DNS Client service on the individual workstations (you can do this through a group policy if you wish) and flushing the local DNS (ipconfig /flushdns). Also, if you are using active directory, you may want to check your DNS server to verify that the gc (Global Catalog) is pointed to the correct server (if you have multiple servers that is). Just some suggestions that you can try.

srav,

Did you by any chance install the original hotfix #811493? If so, remove it with Control Panel, Add/Remove programs.

There is a newer version that does not have these problems that Microsoft Update will then find.

no hot fixes, i tried flush dns no joy if i disable dns client i have a problem as i'm not running wins. It started in one room aand now most of the network has this problem.

Hi,
2 ideas:
1: Do a complete virus scan..Could be BugBear or some other nasty ( any processes running that start with a '~' ? )

2: If any drive mapping is being done ( either at the client PC or in a login script) be sure the network drives are available..Windows is persistant in trying to connect)

You don't really need the DNS Client running on the local workstations in order to resolve DNS requests. If you disable the DNS client, the workstation will just contact the DNS server for information for every request - this can slow the overall netwrok down if there is a lot of machines doing this. Like I said, no gurantee it will fix the problem but it might be worth a shot to try on a couple of boxes. The following is a microsoft explanation of the DNS Client I'll dig around a bit to see if I can find anything on its relation to slow logins.

sray,

Check out your application and system event logs after a logon. You will probably find several services that refuse to start. I was having this problem and ended up disabling ~10 (such as DNS Client, NVidia driver helper service, some transaction service, etc). Things worked great after that.

I've checked the application logs and have a lot of errors from norton antivirus notbeing able to access the decomposer engines-does this affect the network? also more likely cause was a license service error that the product MS back office is out of licenses. again i have only had this problem for 4 weeks getting worse each week any ideas?

srav,

I would disable the av service and get it out of the startup sequence (hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run) to see if the problem went away.

1. It seems a mistake not to be current with the hotfixes. There are several that bear directly on your problem.

2. Make sure you read this earlier thread: XP Logon Slowness thread779-540080

Thanks Bcastner, is was an auto negotiate problem. i forced the NIC and it worked
