Since installing an ISA Server for internet access, our internet has been extreemly slow. Downloads are extreemly slow, some pictures don't download on web pages and via our RAS dial in for our field users, it is unusable.

We have ISA Server 2000 installed with Service Pack 1, running on Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack Two. It is running on a Compaq Deskpro Desktop machine PIII 733 with 256MB RAM. Machine is dedicated to ISA Server, except for a shared printer. Machine has two network cards, one token ring and one ethernet. This is because we have two networks TR and Ethernet and only a 1Mb bridge between them, so we want users to connect to the Internet through their own network.

We previously were running Wingate Proxy on the same spec machine without this slowness.

Can anyone help? Thanks...

Jane

How is your ISA Server setup ? Does the ISA Server request internet objects directly ? Does it upstream to another ISA Server. There is issuses with upstreaming to another proxy.
What type of network adapter do you use to connect to the internet ? modem, isdn, dsl ??
Is there any errors in the Event Log, that apply to the ISA Services ?
Check to see if your LAT table is configured correctly to include both ip addresses of the network cards and NOT The ip address of the internet connection

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

Firstly the server has a direct connection to the internet. We have a leased line to our ISP, and the router that sits between us is configured only to accept requests from the IP Address of the ISA Server.

There is one Warning error in the event log :-

The configuration information of the performance library "C:\WINNT\system32\w3ctrs.dll" for the "W3SVC" service does not match the trusted performance library information stored in the registry. The functions in this library will not be treated as trusted.

As for a LAT table, we don't appear to have one set up, I looked in Network Configuration and only have the "Routing" option. Do I need to set one up?

Thanks,

Jane

Hi:
I am running a similar setup, but have two ethernet cards.
One is dedicated for incoming traffic from users and one is connected to our switch gouing out.
Are you using one nic to function as both..this could definitly slow traffic down.Only a thought..Also you should setup your LAT put in all internal ip ranges in their.
If you have intranets you should also set up your LDT with the addresess of your local servers, and set the browser icon in ISA and in the Internet Explorer to bypass proxy for local servers.Right click on your Server in ISA and Set the performance option. Also right click on your server in ISA go to outgoing and see what type of authentication you are using..If your users are using something other than Microsoft than they will not be able to use pass through authentication that might be why they are not getting in.
Good Luck
