I have just found out about PHP and am wondering if anyone can direct me toward on line manuals or a book that I may purchase to help me get started? I am using phpmyadmin for editing at this point but also have access via telnet to my web server that uses Apache with Front Page extensions but not Database access. The Web Server company I am with uses MySQL and I'm new at learning that also. Sorry for the dumb ?'s but I have to start somewhere with this. Any help would be appreciated.

iza, You could've been more helpful than that. php.net is better used as a reference library rather than a way to learn the language.

Chucker, the easiest way to learn is to already have some knowledge of other languages like java, c, etc. PHP is very similar to those languages, and many of the basic things can be easily picked up and transferred from one to the other.

is a good tutorial on PHP.

is a pretty good starting point for MySQL.

is a good place to get a feel for how to combine MySQL and PHP.

There are other places here and there, as iza said php.net is a good place to go once you get familiar with the language, as is .

Thankx Inssider,
Unfortunately I have not worked with C and have had very little experience with Java. However, I look forward to learning from the links you have posted. It is much appreciated.

Inssider i've actually learnt php on line with php.net (maybe that's why i'm weird coding ;]]) that's why i was giving this url (but yes i do have some knowledge on other langages)
thanx for your tutorials !!!

Inssider,

You are a GODsend! So far I have only visited the,
" is a good place to get a feel for how to combine MySQL and PHP" link and I have accomplished getting my database and web site speaking to each other. YOU ROCK!!!!

THIS is by far the BEST and most user-friendly explanation I have found yet to incorporate both MySQL and PHP into a web site. New users NEED to go there FIRST.

Thankx again!!!

Hi Chucker,
I have found a good start in the SAMS book Teach Yourself PHP4 in 24 Hours, it has been very useful so far as well as Wrox Publishing's Professional PHP Programming. As for MySQL the best book I have found on it so far is the New Riders MySQL, it is a top of the line book and has resolved many of my difficulties thus far.

:) Thank you. I know how much programming has frustrated me, and it's always a pleasure to help someone else not have to go through everything I did. Good luck coding!

Iza, sorry, I thought you were simply writing Chucker off like I see to many programmers do in response to questions. You must be determined if you learned the language through php.net :)

i am ;-)
no, as i knew other langages, php.net was just what i needed

PHP Bible from IDG Books is excellent. I agree with Gordoweb33 about the New Riders MySql book; it is top-notch!
