Very frustrating Internet Issue

I have a laptop running Win XP Pro, SP1. I can not get to the internet, comes up with the DNS error, unable to find server. I have uninstalled IP and reinstalled no change.

Here's the weird symptom. My norton antivirus will run the live update, also my ad-aware program will get is updates over the internet, but IE can not find any web sites over the internet, nor can outlook express find the mail server.

I have ran a virus scan on the computer (nothing found) and also the ad-aware program. I am currently running another spyware program on the unit.

I found on here in another thread about a winsock fix program, I have also ran that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Are you running any firewall software. It can be blocking ports.

Checking the firewall is a good idea. In particular make sure DNS (TCP port 53) is allowed. Other testing you can do is to test your DNS settings. Goto to your command (DOS) prompt. Type "nslookup yahoo.com" and see if DNS is resolving. You should see the name and IP of your DNS server as well as the domain name and associated IP address.

Right, I meant to say TCP/UDP port 53. Oops.

I had this problem and my solution was I went to another computer and downloaded another web browser to install (like Mozilla). I copied the file over to the problem computer and was able to launch mozilla, then I went to microsoft.com and re-insallted IE. Something had corrupted IE and the re-install fixed. hope this helps!
