I am very confused. I need to make sure our clients are pulling packages from their local distribution point/site.

Our environment is SMS 2003 with all Advanced Clients.
We have one Primary site (CS1 - located in Pa) and multiple Secondary sites (one located in Ny).

The site server in NY is set up as a DP and an MP. It appears that some clients in NY are NOT pulling from their DP but from the Primary site server. When I go to the client's SMS Management icon in control panel, I see that their current assigned Site Code is set to the Primary Site (I believe this is correct being an advanced client?) But in the GENERAL Tab, this client's management point is also set to the Primary site server.

Is this correct?

What is the easiest and best way to show what DP's and MP's all/each client is assigned to?

If I set a site server as a Protected DP, does this mean that only that AD entry will be able to pull from this site? What is the purpose of protecting a DP?

Sorry for all the ?'s, I am trying to get clarification.
Thank you
ROn

Yes the only thing you will see is the assigned site, which is always a primary site. Look at the ContentTransferManager.log on the client to see where your clients dp is downloading from.

If you have setup a pdp and have the boundaries correct and not overlapping with another location, the clients should be downloading from that location.

IS there an easy way to look at all clients that are suppose to be assigend to a certain site to see which site they are actually assigned to? I have a feeling that there are clients that are not assigned to the proper site.

Go into SMS and look at the collections. Or run an SMS report called "Computers in a specific site.

Hello guys,
I am new to SMS, I understand it is very useful in the centralised installation and deployment of large large number of new workstation.
The question is can it be used in the deployment of OS and other applications to clone PC? How can this be done.

Secondly, this should have been the first question, how do you install and deploy SMS server and client software?

Thanks.

2nd Q thats a class not a question :-D

Depending on the size of your org and its locations It could be from one server to many, Clients can installed from an image, a SMS push, or GPO.
