Ok here's the deal...I've been fairly computer literate for a while but I now have my new toy which is a laptop (ok, perhaps behind the times a bit but you know how it goes). I have hi speed internet and have the Qwest router(?) that was rented/sold to me at the time I set that up. Was told I need a router (didn't I already have one?) so I got one then I was told I really didn't need one since I had the Qwest thing that is a router. So I did not install the other one. All that was on my desktop. I want my laptop to be able to get on the network (I guess that is it) and to be able to share files.

Question(s)

1-Do I actually have a router? It says on the box that it is a DSL modem with wireless gateway.

2- Do I need another router? If so what do I look for?

3- How do I set it up so that everything is safe (or as safe as possible these days)? I have read articles about doing it but frankly some of it really still scares me.

Any possible help will be greatly appreciated...and of course if you can think of anything that would help I would love to know. Thanks again...

We need more information to be able help you. What is the manufacturer and model for the DSL modem with wireless gateway? And what is the manufacturer and model for your laptop wireless adapter?

Well the DSL modem is Actiontek model GT701-WG. To be honest I'm not exactly sure what you mean by wireless adapter. It is a Toshiba laptop if that helps.

If it's a brand new laptop, then it might possibly have a wireless device built in. Check the manual before rushing out to buy something you may not need...

ROGER - G0AOZ.

Yes it is a fairly new laptop and is supposed to have all the wireless stuff builtin. What would I look for to see what I have?

Assuming that its running XP because its new. Click on start--Control panel---Network connections.

There you should find a adapter for you wirless it indeed the laptop came with one.

Yep they are both runnin XP - thanks, I'll take a look.
