I have an old win98 machine which I am going to re-install from scratch but before I do has anyone seen this problem before...
at bootup the version conflict manager appears but does not list any files that are conflicting. The user has to close it every time it starts which is very annoying. The pc itself seems to be struggling as if something is unning in the background but the task manager shows nothing????

any suggestions (apart from throwing the pc away!)

thanks for the tip but...

ther was no "sfc" listed, or anything that looked remotely related to the version conflict manager. What is the exe file for the manager? I might try moving it anyway...

Removing SFC (System File Checker) from the start up would temporarily resolve the issue, but not solve the problem.

Try removing any new software you've put on the machine.

Also, try running Dr Watson, this is quite a useful tool that not many people use, because they dont know about it. Goto the Run command and type "drwatson" - a little icon will appear in the taskbar next to the clock. Right-click the icon and choose Options, and at the bottom under View, make sure you've got it set to open in advanced view, and click ok.

Now double click the icon, and Dr Watson will scan the computer. Here you can get information on everything that's running, hooks, modules, drivers and it'll also report problems too.

If Dr Watson fails to explain the problem, then go into your MSCONFIG and start a process of elimination. Untick something that is ticked and reboot.. if you still get the problem, re-tick and move onto the next line.. its a long and tedious process, but will probably guarantee you find out what's causing the problem.
