Hi, have a customer upgrading their current IP 500 V1 to V8.1 from V5.0, they currently have 8 ports of voicemail pro - can someone just confirm if I need to include the essential edition licence or not?

As long as you upgrade to R7 and then R8.1 it will create the virtual essential license for you. But, as stated here many times that license is tied to the IP500 chasis so if it dies, they would then need to buy the real essential edition license to get their vmpro back.

cheers Telecomboy, I take it you would add the 8.1 upgrade licence prior to taking it to V7?
You add the upgr.lic right away. Won't show up correctly before you get to 6.0.
I go 5.0-6.0-7.0-8.1, just to be sure.
Since you have a V1, it's quick.
Since you have a VMPro, don't forget to take a full backup before you upgrade. Every thing like, mods, wavs, VM folder, etc.

Since you have a V1, it's quick.

Yes, as long as You upgrade the 500 from R5 to R7 first, You will get a virtual essential license.
Then You can upgrade to R8+, no problem
But if their IP500 dies, they would then need to buy the real essential edition license if they get another IP500, or upgrade to 500v2.
I always suggest real essential license, it saves headaches down the road.
Also, make sure You get large upgrade license, this will save headaches in future if they expand past 32 users, or add external modules.

Yes, add the license file first, then upgrade to R7, then to R8.1. I just did one prior to R9 coming out. No need to go to R6, just R7 so it creates the virtual essential license.
Ok, we don't know what cards/modules that are on it. Got nasty faults on a Phone 30 skipping 6.0. Better safe than sorry. Your choice, but it takes you 5 min to do an extra jump.
