I am using verizon DSL for my connection and AOL Bring Your Own Access for email, i only use one computer (but plan to add 2 more).

My problem is that once connected to dsl using winpoet i fail to maintain active connectivity, so everytime i open IE to browse i have to click "try again" in the work offline or try again error popup screen. Additionally embedded hyperlink images in my aol mail fail to load, presumably b/c no IE connection is detected (even though i am online).

please help, my fiance is getting very frustrated and i am at my wits end with fixing this, aol help is useless (they have told me to reinstall aol 5 times now) and verizon dsl said that their install can corrupt IE and pointed me to Microsoft support.

thank you so much for your time

my hardware setup:
pentium 3 running win2000pro sp3
netgear 10/100 ethernet card connected as only computer directly via cat5 to westell dsl modem.
westell dsl modem connected to phoneline.

Have you ever walked thru the setup of the aol software to work in conjunction with winpoet? This i am curious about...seeing as aol has asked you to reload their software so many times....and also since the aol software has nothing to do with IE at all.

If i was in your posistion i would do this
-- open up IE and click on tools and go to internet options for a few reasons
-- go to the advanced tab and click on the button at the bottom for restore defaults
-- before you click ok...go to the connections tab....make sure that if you see aol and verizon/winpoet in there...that verizon is the default connection...and the setting is set to "never dial a connection", click on the "lan settings" button and ensure there is a check beside auto detect settings
-- now click okay...close IE altogether and reopen it

Since you are using aol only for email....there software doesn't even need to be on your pc since you can just go to access it there...however since it is...thats why i'm thinking there is still a connectoid in there somewhere for them

Also...you'll want to go to start>settings>network and dial up connections and see if there is an aol connectoid in there...if there is, ensure it is disabled

You see...if everything is set up properly for the dsl...and you are getting booted offline every so often..my first instinct is not that IE is corrupt. If you try these things and they don't work...please message me here again with the results and describe the connectivity issue in a bit more detail.
sometimes discussion is the only way to learn

First, thanx for your response and help.

Here is some more info. I did not know there is steps to set up aol with winpoet. If you know how to do this it might help. My problem is my fiancec likes aol's GUI, ,address book, etc.. , i would happily use aolmail.aol.com to get mail, but alas, ,it is not my choice.

-complications. Once i open a mail in webmail that contains embedded hyperlink images (and they are stored in cache) they load fine in aol. (By the way, aol uses IE intergrated into there software for reading mail). If you go to aol's it opens ie's properties but with a tab for aol connectivity. interesting).
- in my dialup connections i have 3 items: LAN, verizon, and aol. AOl's icon is greyed out and even if i right click and select properties nothing happens.
-both aol and verizon are listed in connections, verizon is default. settings are never dial. LAN settigns are auto-detect.

more detailed description of the problem(s)
1) AOL - embedded hyperlink images in emails dont load (red x and link location only). Embedded pictures (email attachments) DO load. Embedded hyperlink images will load only after being stored in chache by openng the mail in webmail.
2) IE - constantly (at least once per session) get the "no connection detected" would you like to work offline or try again popup. click try again and works immediately.

thanx again

trancer23,

I don't believe there is a specific way to configure AOL to work with DSL other than making sure the access method is ISP/LAN. You have already switched your billing to BYOA. That's good.

The problem may be that the system is not sensing the internet connection. Try Solution 2 in this fix to the registry. REMEMBER, REGISTRY CHANGES CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HARM TO THE SYSTEM IF DONE IMPROPERLY. BACK THE REGISTRY UP BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES.

Hope that helps.

Unfortunately the registry changes did not work. I tried it both ways, (Without and without quotes, i wasnt sure) but neither worked. I still got the work offline try again error. (Btw, the files were missing). I have deleted them since they did not work.

I am tempted to buy a linksys router and get rid of pppoe all together.

any ideas?

thanx in advance

Hi, I found this site via AOL/google, searching for "aol powered by verizon". It looks like a great one. I'm waiting for my customer to call back. I replaced the hard drive on her machine and will be adding a CDRW, loading drivers, software, etc. She has a Dell Dim. E4LFX w 500mhz proc. and internal Aztech MDP3880-W(B) modem. She swears this is the only modem she uses, though she sent an Aol Plus Quick Start Guide for an Actiontec DSL USB modem. I have the Actiontec Home DSL ver 3.0a driver cd, but the guide refers to an AOL Plus cd and, of course the external modem. Can I proceed or do I have to send her home for the missing stuff?

This will be a second machine for her 3 kids and we are leaning toward a Linksys wireless network for mobility and to avoid running Cat 5 when she gets her new Dell. [noevil]
