Is it possible that a Verizon wireless usb card can cause my on board laptop wireless to fail. I have gone in to advance settings and checked "use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" but that setting does not stick, it goes away when I exit, and the connection maintains theat it is not connected with the red x.
If so how do I overcome this so I can still use the free wifi at local restaurants instead of my broadband card.

You may have both VZW Aircard and 802.11 on the same laptop. Been there, done that.

From my experience: I disabled the air card when wanting to use the 802.11
In another situation I was able to use the Aircard for internet access and share the connection with my second laptop using 802.11

Sometimes just having hope for a solution will provide the impetus for continued efforts.
