I'm looking for a backup solution for 2 servers and i was thinking of veritas 11D with veritas support tired of dell crap support for veritas.

I want to buy a new server with an LTO2 Drive

Backup to disk for both server to the new server and also a backup to disk also for both servers.

Has anyone restored from a backup to disk and what was the % of success

thanks

B2D works great and its a WHOLE lot quicker than trying to pull down tapes. We backup about 700GB of data daily. We switched to B2D M-F, and then run those jobs to tape on the weekends. The probability of failure these days on disk is much lower than tape failure.

Yeah, I know we do a lot of backup to tapes and is really a pain in butt sometimes, but have yet to have one B2D fail ... and yea it's a bit quicker.

We have the tapes for it so that is why we use them. I'd rather go buy another drive for the SAN and do like 'efector'

you stil? need tapes for offsite backup that's just life although disk tapes have just been released

right now im just using B2D to a RAID1 setup. the tape drive is not being used but i guess ill get around to using it again. I retired it about 2 months ago.

Felixx,

What about having a viable offsite alternative to restore from in the case of a natural disaster, human error or theft? Unexpected and unavoidable circumstances always do arise. I dont think I would be putting all of my eggs in one basket.

We also run backups to disk daily and duplicate our weekend fulls to tape for offsite storage.

Corey,
To be honest, when I started this job I had to teach myself this program and figure out the fastest way to get the back up organized here. Hence finding this site :)

I went to B2D because I was getting confused on how the tape drive worked in regards to rotation etc.

We have a Dell Powervault 122T that uses DLTtape IV tapes. BE has the robotic info, im just needing to research that still.

Right now I have a great schedule for the B2D. I do a weekly, daily and a monthly (every 4th sunday of a month)

But Lately I have been in the field a lot and there isnt anyone here to change tapes.

If you have any suggestions I would be totally open. I agree that having tapes to back up the backup is a great idea. its just a matter of implementing.
