I am reviewing the Backup Exec website for additions and upgrades (I have 9.1 installed) and don't find it very clear on selecting a Remote Agent or a CAL.

Is this statement correct?
CALs allow Remote Agents to access other servers?

i.e., install a remote agent (say SQL) on the backup server and if you have a total of 4 servers you will need 1 remote agent and 3 CALs

Hi procatherder

In answer to your question, no that's not the way it works.

The way it is where I work:

We have 2 servers. One server (DC) has the tape drive in and controls the backup for both servers, the remote agent is installed on the other server.

You have remote agents on servers that are not running the backup jobs but require backup.

Hope this helps.

OK then why when selecting software do you have both a remote access choice and a client access lic choice. Do you think they are using these terms interchangably?

Im not too sure about that to be honest.

At a logical guess, I would say that they arn't being used interchangably - the remote access choice will be for servers requiring backup but not directly running the software, and the client access will be for the backup servers themselves.

CAL is normally for how many users (clients) will be accessing the software at one time.

For example, let's say I'm a system admin and I create a backup server with Backup Exec and one tape library. I partition the tape library into three partitions; Human Resources, Sales, and System. My two departments (HR and sales) do their own backups because of sensitive data. I do the the backup of system information. All three backup admins have to access (Client Access) the backup server and use the Backup Exec software. Since we could be doing this at the same time, we need three CALs. HR and Sales have two different databases and they are not part of the backup server. So I need a Remote Agent for each of those servers. Plus, since I backup the system information (such as Exchange, shared files, etc) I need remote agents for each computer that I backup.

Does that clarify the difference?

my case is:
I have 4 servers, one is the backup server running veritas backup EXEC 10. and all other 3 were installed remote agents. to backup all other remote servers, I have to type 3 remote agent licenses number in the backup server, so that they can be backed up.
don't know if helps.
