I was looking at the debate between Veritas Backup Exec vs CA's ARCserve and saw that quite a few of you have had experience with both. Maybe one of you can help me with a problem I am having. As my name indicated, I am relatively new to the IT field, having started three weeks ago. My problem is how to extract databases/files from a backup tape that was created with Veritas Backup Exec version 8.50 for Windows NT 4.0. We now use ARCserve2k version 6.0 running on Windows NT 4.0 service pack 5. My task for now is to extract the info from the Backup Exec tape and have it installed on one of our servers so we can do some development work on them, and to say the least, I am clueless as to how I can achieve this. Time is running out and you're probably looking at a very desperate man here. Any help/suggestion/advice will be much appreciated.

If you don't have access to a Backup Exec server then you could send the tape into a "Recovery" company that will recover the data off the tape and put it into a format you can use.

I don't see the reason why changing(big fan of Backup exec =))) but the tape format used in Backup Exec is the same as in NT backup, in fact NT backup is developed by Veritas. So you can use NT backup to Exctract the data that you want. As another alternative since NTbackup in NT4.0 doesn't support autoloaders should you have that, you can download an eval version of Backupexec 8.6 and install it as eval for 60 days and that way extract your data. Also if you had an Arcserve tape and had backupexec you could restore the tape using Backup Exec.

Hi Canta:

Thank you for the advice. I tried to use NT backup utility but unable to do so (Start/Program/Adm Tool/Backup). Each time I clicked on the Backup/Restore button, I was given this message:
(A SCSI tape drive has been detected, but either the driver was not loaded or failed to start....)
I went to device mgr and see that all the necessary drivers were started. I am not sure what exactly is the problem here. Either way, I am stuck. Is there a way you can help me with step by step instruction as to how I can use the NT native backup to extract the data.

By the way, I downloaded the trial version of Backup Exec 8.6 but unable to set it up on my server. I was repeatedly given the error message 423-unable to set up Backup Exec.

Once again, thank you for your advice. Any helpful suggestion and/or advice will me much appreciated.
