Veritas Back Up Exec- Job failing

I am trying to run a Back up on my server. Firstly I use hardware compression, but the amount of data I have exceeds the space on my 35 gig tapes. Is there a way of achieving better compression??
Also, the job runs on both tapes and then after a time fails. What causes these failures and how can they be avoided????
