I have 4 computers that are connected to the embeded switch of a FortiNet Firewall. Each of the computers live on a seperate VLAN and I do NOT have Active Directory or a PDC or any other kind of LAN in place.

Do I need Active Directory or any other form of LAN in order to utilize Veritas BACKUP EXEC WIN V10.0 across my computers for backup and restore ?

In order words, when backing up or restoring via Veritas BACKUP EXEC can I refere to computer boxes by their IP address or do I need a name originated from a domain, tree ?

I like to setup on-line backup scenario where I would backup my data on a Hard Disk of one of the 4 computer boxes.

Thanks.

You can setup the backup by user defined selection by IP. With Version 10.0 you should have to mess with much of the network setting to get it pass the firewall if its blocking any ports. The only thing you cant get a good restore of the system state when you backup by IP. So I suggest editing the host file on the Backup server and addint the names. Then create a user defined selection by name

Steve,
Thanks of the posting. To be clear, my computers don't need to participate in a legacy or active directory domain in order to fully utilize Veritas backup and restore ? correct ?

No, long as you have right to the machines. Basically sound like you have everything in a DMZ and in workgroups. What I do for example..create local admin account called "veritas" on each box and add it to the administrator group. make it the same password for each. In backup exec you would create a logon account to attach to these machines. Basically it will use pass thru authenication to backup them up. You may have to enable restrict anonymous support on each machine. There is technote on that.

Steve, Thanks a bunch. Your post has been extremely helful.
