Hi Guys

If i have an IP Phone and SIP trunks on same codec eg g711, would this no longer consume 2 VCM channels? or would my provider (gamma) need to support direct media connection to do that?

both sides need to have direct media enabled for it to drop the VCM channel(s)

it will still need a VCM channel to establish the connnection

Ok Cheers Westi.

will it consume 2 VCM channels (1 for SIP Trunk and 1 for the IP Extn) or just the 1? Sorry for daft questions.

should only be 1 per call

If both sides use the same codec but not direct media the connection will be 'RTP relay'. As far as I understand that IPO just forwards the packets but has no real work with that process like converting from one codec to another.

SSA will tell you how many VCM channels are used but I see a chance that VCM is only used to initiate the connection.

I can tell you that with a SIP trunk and H323 phones you do not need a VCM.

Once I replaced an IPO500 server, and forgot to swap the VCM module.

The customer was already making phone calls, when I discoverd that voicemail did not work.

Then I found out that I forgot about the VCM module.. :)

Star for Okkie. VCMs are about codec conversion of the media stream and don't care if the signalling methods are different (eg. H323 vs SIP). So if both a using G711 then no VCM required.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

Okkie26 that’s good to know. So just be clear on the usage if extns were tdm and using sip trunks am I correct in saying only one vcm ch would be used per call to convert the codec ?

Thanks Okkie
I remember that you cannot even start a call is you have no VCM channels but apparently that has changed somewhere in the releases.
