VB6 Package & Deployment setup will not install on XP!

I have created and coded a comprehensive system using VB 6 Enterprise with SP5 with an Access 2000 backend database. Used the package and deployment wizard to create a single cab installation that could be ran from a network drive.

Actual coding was done at home on a Win2000 system, the setup was processed on what started out to be a Win98 workstation. Had no problem installing on other Win98 workstations. The workstation I was using was upgraded to a Win2000 system.

After reprocessing the setup, the install process took longer and had to be restarted a couple of times, but would still install on a Win98 workstation.

The client is in the process of upgrading their network, albeit slow, one workstation at a time. The new systems will have 2.8 GHz processors and run XP Pro. The install process gives this real long message that pops up after the copy process, which states something about the file version and that you have to exit setup and restart the computer to install these files. Then rerun the setup.

When you restart the system, no files are installed. When rerun the setup, you get the same error message. Cannot get past this point.

Was able to get the program to run on this workstation by manually creating the necessary ODBC DSN entries and modifying an ini file on the network.

The client really wants the install program to work correctly on their future XP workstations.

I'm at a loss, have searched the Microsoft site and have not been able to find anything on this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

This is an ongoing bug, and I think was fixed in SP5. I see from your post that you already have SP5 installed though, so this problem should have gone with it. I know I had this problem with certain projects setting up onto 2000 and XP machines, but like I said, it went with the install and re-compile using SP5.

I know there are already a few posts on this subject here, but as always, when you need them, I can't lay my hand to them. Have a search and see what you can find.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks,

Followed the thread and printed out the knowledge base article.

Also after my post, I did find another one on the Visual Source Installer and went to Microsoft and downloaded it. I think since I will have to be installing this on XP Pro, I will try this first. The creating of a msi install package.

Thanks again

rich914,

Re your comment: " ... I did find another one on the Visual Source Installer and went to Microsoft and downloaded it."

Would you be able to post the URL please.

Thanks, Greg.
