VB Books 1

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good book to begin learning Visual Basic 6.0 with? I know there are a lot out there, but I'm just starting to program in this language.

There are lots of books out there. But I am going to make an asumption first. You wrote that you are "just starting to program in this language". From this I am going to assume that you have programmed in another language. If that is the case don't get a book that is for beginning programmers. An intermediate book would probably suit you fine.

As far as recomendations go, stay away from the 'Learn **** in 21 days' books. I started with 'VB From the Ground Up', it's part of a series and is currently on loan to a friend so I can't even give you the publisher or ISBN. Another good series is published by Wrox (the red ones). They have books for all levels.

Another thing to consider is that you won't learn it all in one book. So determine your current VB needs. Are you doing a database app or a web based app and gert a book that will teach you what you need right now.

A third option is an online school. There are a few that allow you to take 'lessons' and learn what you need for free (or they were free when I used them) If i remember correctly I went to

(in the UK) and

(in the US). Both were good.

If you're just starting in VB6 (like I was 1-1/2 years
ago) you'll only need two texts, BEGINNING VISUAL BASIC 6, by Peter Wright, and TEACH YOURSELF VISUAL BASIC 6, by Scott Warner. Both are available from amazon.com
a) They don't assume you know ANYTHING, yet,
b) They illustrate things with plenty of simple
examples, and
c) They have simple exercises - to let you test
things out.

I started by using computing projects in Visual Basic By D.Christopher published by Payne-Gallway ISBN 1-903112-33-8
Have been using it for a couple of months and its very good starts at the basics and goes on from there

I'd cast another vote for the Wrox books (of which the Peter Wright book mentioned by THOMASNG is one). I haven't really used any other instructional books but I've always found the Wrox material to be very understandable and well paced.

I teach VB on a college level and here is a reference book that I use for my class. Visual Basic® 6 in Plain English
by Brian R. Overland. I have talked with Brian and he was on the VB team at Microsoft. Good basic book, should be on everyone desk. regards, John

Visual Basic 6 From The Ground Up by Cornell is realy good!

I would agree with ComputerJin, Visual Basic 6.0 for Dummies is a great book. It is informative but is also very enjoyable to read. The author, Wallace Wang (could be mistaken, I'm going off my memory alone) is hillarous. I would highly recommend this book to any newbie or veteran.
