Hello,

I have a G3 Version 11, and Im'm trying to put some new professional recorded announcements onto a VAL board. These announcements are currently PCM, 16BPS, 44.1 khzs. When I convert the format on these files to CCITT A-Law, or CCITT Mu-Lw, they sounds like cr*p.

I am using Microsoft Sound Recorder 5.1 to conver these files. Does anyone know the best way to convert these kind of files so the quality stays similar to the original?

Thanks very much,

Joe

OK, I installed the program Goldwave and still get the same results when converting down to 8 bit, 8khtz. When I converted down to 8 bit, and 44.1khz it sounds good.

However the VAL card won't accept it in this 44.1khz format. Is seems the VAL board only accepts 8 bit, with 8khtz which makes my recordings very scratchy. Is there any better format that 8 bit, 8khz that I can try, or a better way to convert than MS Sound Recorder or Goldwave?
Thanks,
Joe

Tier3,

After some playing with the Gwave, I was able to get some good recordings. They are not perfect, but 100x better and certainly useable. Thanks very much for your help.

sound recorded in XP works great for this purpose. If you looking to edit your wav file first then use audacity.

Thanks fellas,

I was able to get a decent, useable,(not great)conversion with Goldwave. I conveted the files to 64 bit rate, audio sample 8 bps, 8 khzs sample rate, and the audio format is CCITT U-law.

I dont know if the VAL board can accept anything higher than this. It doesn't seem to. I'm open to other formats

BTW.. The original files that I converted ferom are; 1411kbits; 16bit; two channels; 44KHZ; PCM..

How are you listening to the file? If you listen to a 8kps file on your laptop it will sound like crap. If you listen via the VAL board from the phone it will be much better.

I'm listening via the VAL board. It is OK, and at this stage, acceptable, but not close to the original. It is about the equivenlant of recording from a handset but with a slight tinge of barreling or echo.
