Hello All,

I know that I am not setting up my VAL board correctly and I believe it has to do with the data module extension. I think it may have to do with the Link option on the data module page. What should it be? How do I know what link number it should be?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Joel

Could you post a screen capture of the ip-node names, ip-interfaces, VAL data module - I could double check them.

Here are the captures:

Have you tried plugging another computer or laptop into the LAN cable you're using for the VAL board. See if you can get a link light then. If so, then I would say that you probably have a bad card or connector because you should have a link light regardless of the programming in the switch.

Joel,

you mentioned earlier that you were using a cross-over cable.

you should use a straight through for a connection to a data switch. cross-overs are used only for like to like conections.
(like to like = switch to switch or NIC to NIC)

treat the val board like a NIC card on a pc.

Thanks for your response. We arent using a crossover cable, its a straight through wire to one of our switches. At this point, Ive called the vendor and they will be replacing the board and the amphenol network connector.

Thanks,

Joel

The service state on link 3 shows in service/idle weird! still unable to ping the medpro??

Guys,

Are you using VAL boards with Definity R9.02? Because I've been told that I need to upgrade to R11 in order to get the VAL w/ 3000+ seconds recording space?

Cheers,
NJ

PS: Please let me know if my advice has been of any use.

Don't know if you have the maintenance permissions from Avaya to do this, but try this. It has solved some of the same issues.

a. busy board NNNN
b. status board NNNN to determine traffic level
c. disable board in ip-interfaces form (i.e., change "y" to "n" in left-most column of the ip-interfaces form)
d. reset board NNNN
e. enable board in ip-interfaces form (i.e., change "n" to "y" in left-most column of the ip-interfaces form)
f. release board NNNN

You can only have 100Mbps on release 10 or higher. You also need to have the CAT5 IO cable. Its the cable that goes from the backplane/pins to the brass backplate. It has the amphenol on it. Also the gray 259A adapter that goes onto the amphenol so you can plug your patch cable into isn't CAT5 rated. It's CAT3. You'll need to have the black adapter that has a serial connector on the top as well as the RJ45 connector. That adapter works with C-LANs and IP Media Processor (Prowler) boards. FYI: you might here some Avaya people use the term Prowler board when they are talking about the IP Media Processor. Prowler was the name that was used when it was in development.

Also, I was incorrect in one of my earlier posts. The command to see all the links is 'disp com links'. Sorry about that. All these commands can drive you nuts.

Joel7, I am going to get that document to you. I just have to remove some proprietary info from it. Been kinda busy being the only 'non-ethernet challenged' tech in my area.

FYI: The Avaya comcode to the 100Mbps adapter for use on r10 and above is 848525887. 'Remember that this adapter is different that the adapter for the IPSI boards.' The comcode to the Twisted Pair I/O cable to enable 100Mbps on older SCC/MCC cabinets is 700234032. If this is the kit, it should come with an instruction sheet, I/O cable and a small sticker you place on the front slot number label on the carrier.

Wow PBX, that was some great information. I will try this and let you know how it goes. Thanks again

Quick and Easy VAL Board Install

Get static IP address, data mod extension, subnet, Gateway, and network name of the VAL board from the customer.

IP Address _____________________________
Data Mod Ext _____________________________
Subnet _____________________________
Gateway _____________________________
VAL Board Name _____________________________

1. Insert VAL board into empty slot and put black IP Media Adapter (possibly in a little white box inside VAL board carton) on the corresponding slot/amphenol connector on the back of cabinet.
2. Let board settle. (no lights on board) [3 to 5 minutes]
3. Do ‘cha node-n i’
A. Name board: i.e. VAL#1, VAL#2, or what the customer wants.
B. Enter IP address.
4. Do ‘cha ip-i’
Don’t enable until you reach the end of the page!
A. For Type enter ‘VAL’.
B. Enter slot number where VAL was
installed: i.e. 01D11.
C. Enter name from step 3-A.
D. Enter Subnet.
E. Enter Gateway.
F. Enter Network Region ‘1’ unless
told otherwise.
5. Do ‘disp comm li’
A. Write down next unused link for next
step. ___________
6. Do ‘add data next’
A. For Type enter ‘ethernet’.
B. For Port enter VAL board location plus ‘33’
for port: i.e. 01D1133
C. Under Link put in the link number from 5-A.
D. Under Name put in name from 3-A.
7. Plug in ethernet cable to adapter that you should
have put on the back of the Definity.
8. Do ‘cha ip-i’ and put Enable to ‘y’. Do not enable
if there is no ethernet connection.
9. Do ‘sa t’.
10. Do ‘disp ala’ to check VAL board for alarms and
resolve if any.
11. Job complete. You may install Voice Announcement
Over LAN software.

PBX, thanks again. Unfortunately, all signs point to either a bad board or IP Media Processor. Ive tried each one of these steps and in that order but I still have no link lights. Ive tried changing the cable, the port on the switch and the switch to which it is connected with no success. Thankfully, the company that sold it to us will be sending us another board and connector.

Thanks,

Joel

Joel,
So come on--what was the problem?? Inquiring minds want to know!!
PBXTech-Your cheat sheet on the VAL board install would make a great FAQ submission.

MM, the problem was a faulty board, sorry I didnt post that here. Once I put in the new board, all systems were go. The other problem were having is with Network Segments. Depending on what Network Segment my machine is sittng on, depends on whether or not I can use VAL Manager correctly. I found the problem and everything is working correctly now.

I am having a similar problem. Cannot talk to the VAL board over ethernet. I do have a link light, however can't ping it. Also, status below shows disconnected and no MAC address. Any clues? Thanks!

I had to get several things fixed before I could get mine to work. First, I had the get the board replaced. Then I had to get the Ethernet adapter for the Definity replaced. I also changed the port speed to 10 half. Once I did all this, I was able to use the board correctly and with no problems.

Joel

Can anyone think of a reason the VAL board would not show it's MAC address unless it was a bad board??
