Are there vast differences (i.e. improvements) between Version 6.1 and Version 6.5 of Business Objects. I've heard rumors that is the case. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Unfortunately not until after the BO conference, next week. I'm including an example in my presentation.

We've just had a vist from the Business Objects marketing guy....

Version 6.5 is supposed to be a lot better than version 6.1, he even admitted that 6.1 was a terrible version that is full of bugs...

Basically, now that Business Objects and Crystal REPORTS HAVE MERGED, THE NEW VERSIONS WILL BE A COMBINATION OF THE TECHNOlogies used in both of these products.

Business objects functionality with Crystal Reports stability (not used crystal, but the guy told me that this is a good thing).

Version 6.5 is supposed to be the first "combined" version and the next release (i believe this will be 6.11 due to crystal being on this version) will combine aspects of webi with the full client software as well as having more crystal features which should make it very versatile.

We've got a 6.5 upgrade disk on order, i'll let you know what it's like...

DrSmyth,

Your statement "he even admitted that 6.1 was a terrible version that is full of bugs..." is bad news for me. Here at our shop they've decided to go with V6.1 for the long haul, through sickness and health, as it were. They said something about not wanting to mess with the API changes necessary to install V6.5. So, this thread turned out to be moot for me but hopefully others have gained some useful info from it.

Your marketing guy is completely wrong.

6.5 has absolutely nothing to do with Crystal. It is BO all the way. There is a thing call the BO Crystal Integration Pack (BCIP) that will allow a Crystal report to be displayed in Infoview. That's it.

BO 11 (now called BO XI (eXtreme Intelligence)) will be the first attempt at integration, but it will NOT have a BO full-client. The release is intended for Crystal users who want WebI and for BO users who use WebI only.

BO 12 (no idea what they'll call that one) will be the real integration point for all customers. This is exactly what BO has said all along.

6.1 is a lousy release. I've even heard the BO VP of R&D say that 6.1a was bad. 6.1b was better. 6.1.3 was even better. 6.5.1 is simply more of the same. It performs MUCH better and is more stable. The API is EXACTLY the same. There are several new features that are really good. The API is exactly the same. The difference you are probably referring to is the fact that you have to use the SUN Java Virtual Machine with 6.5.

Can we kill this topic and start a new one?

6.5 server installation is a snap compared to 6.1, it's even a bit easier than 5i was, and that includes installation of the tomcat/apache setup.

NOTHING should get in the way of upgrading to 6.5 if you have the chance.

6.5.1 has better Security Configuration Tool which replaces the LDAP Configuration Tool.
6.5.1 supports Windows 2003.
6.5.1 comes with Apache 2.0, much better.
