Hi erm you clever (but maybe scary) super back-end dudes...

I am close to finishing my first site and have deliberately put this off till now, due solely to my utter, contemptible inadequacy in anything 'back-end' related.

I have my contact page here but I dont really have a clue how to set it up so it worx properly.
I have access to some basic scripts from my hoster, ones that will meet my needs but I have no idea what I'm doing [lol].
Attached is the contact pagebut it's not set up right.
I need to figure out where to put the mail.pl or whatever should go.

Any help very very much appreciated.

here's the page in progress...

thank you for yor help! :)

I would suggest simply using a <a mailto:....> HTML tag. Simple and Effective. It will pop an email window from Netscape or IE you can even set the subject automatically. I don't have enough time to give an example. I'll check back tomorrow to see if you figured it out.

Or, check faq452-653 which goes over the basic of CGI and check the faq section of this Perl forum which has a few entries for sending mail.

And, beware the evil typo.

Say thx erm Goboating I will checkout the faq...
Had a quick look and it looked pretty helpful.
I'm working nightshifts at the mo, so my responses will be slow AND stupid for a few days!!!

I already have mailto's on the page thx, but I want my site visitors to be able to send stuff from the site itself as well, and I want it proccessed efficiently.

I definitely gotta get my head round this cgi lark! :)
Thanx a lot dude!

Oooops, sorry about that, you do already have a mailto in there. X-)

If your ISP has a mailer script available, then they need to provide you some documenation about it. Have they? It might be that you can call that script and pass it some items like addresses and mail content or it might be that you could 'use' or 'require' it which would make it behave as if it were a part of your code. If you can give a little info about that we can chase it down.

Please use descriptive titles and check the FAQs.

I am pretty sure that geocities does not support custom scripting on it's free webspace area. I believe that your using a free site.

goboating's suggestion of using the mailto tag is an option.

If you are not looking to do much more that you already have then geocities may meet your needs.

sry not much help due to server restrictions.

Hi guys!
No Haunter Im not using geo, but one and one actually.

I haven't started my hosting as I wanted it to be as near complete as poss b4 my 1st upload.
GuessI gotta start thinking practically and forget the sweet sentiments!

I will contact them and crank it up...

More soon,
And thank you so so much for your help. :)

It is pretty straight forward to download Apache onto your box and do all of your development locally. Even after you have a host. In my work environment, my organization has a main web server machine. I have a separate Sun Ultra in my cube that serves as my development environment. I do everything in the dev environment before any of it goes to the public viewable machine. You could setup the same pattern with your local box as your dev environment.

Lol I am trying to translate what u wrote! lolol

erm ok so I'll look for an apache sort of 'pretend' server right?
i d/l'd coldfusion express i don spose thats the same right?
Is that any good btw?

There's nothing &quot;pretend&quot; about apache web server. Many ISP's use it. Tracy Dryden

ditto to Tracy's comment. There is nothing 'pretend' about Apache. It is the most widely web server out there. And given the fact that I am currently rebuilding a M$ W2K IIS box after a worm ate it, I like staying away from IIS any time I can. ( and this is not the first IIS related infection,...not by far <grumble grumble>)

Apache is a very competent product.

About CF, I don't know. When I have a choice, I use MySQL or PostgreSQL, Perl, javascript, and Apache and RH Linux.

Thanks for the compliments on the web site, I'll tell my boss you liked it.

You know, now that you mention it, sometimes programming DOES seem a little like voodoo. :)

goBoating had the best advice about the mail program. If your isp does provide one, they should have some documentation on how to use it. It ought to be pretty simple. They'll should give you the correct reference to put in your <form action=&quot;&quot;>, and you'll probably have to name some of your fields according to their standards so they'll know where to find them (especially the from address), and you'll probably have to provide at least one hidden field for YOUR email address. Hi,

If your server doesn`t have a mail script, you can use one that is remotly hosted.

I know there are a lot of remote hosts out there but couldn`t give any recomendations as I`ve never personally used them.

Hope this helps
Wullie
