Can anyone help me out?
I keep getting this same error and i can't resolve it.
My HP-UX 10.20 server keeps giving me this
"utmp error"
Login at lowest level

Then it kicks me out!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?
How i can prevent this from happening in the future?

Thanks/Regards

Hi,
It's likely you have a corrupted /etc/utmp file.
Try to remove the /etc/utmp and reboot the server.
Or try to zero out the utmp file and login again.

Thanks mewa,
I have done this before and it does work, but how can i prevent this from happening in the future, the file is a already a read only.

You need to initialised both /etc/utmp and /etc/utmpx.
They should start updating simultaneously.

I generally carryout the following command and all works fine.

> /etc/utmp ; >/etc/utmpx
