Had a no-boot problem. Inserted xp install disks and managed to get it back to the xp windows screen. Unfortunalely it asks for user name and password. In safe mode and repair mode etc, it asks for admin name and password. I got the xp install disks second hand and don't have this info. All the computer repair stores say they use a utility to get past the admin/password screen to do repairs. I want to get past the admin/password screen to do repairs (if more needed) and to RESET and or ELININATE the need for this screen.
Thanks
M.

Surely the admin username/password are part of the particular installation, not the source disk.

If I have misunderstood what you meant by that then I apologise. But even so I doubt you'll get much help with password avoidance tools on this site.

This may or may not be true. Most computer repair shops have it, and have told me so. The will use it on my computer to reset it for me if I send it to their shop. This is my personal PC. The 'administrator' used to be a close freind who I cannot ask for help anymore. He was a professional PC person, and I didn't know He set my install up as an administrator.
Please help.
M.

I can honestly say that I don't know of any specific tools to get past the password. I'm not saying they don't exist (I'm sure they do), but I don't know where to get them. Sorry.

How can you not know the admin password on your own PC? Without it you can't really do much if you want to upgrade or install new software...

I don't know the password because an X-boyfreind installed my software... dah... didn't I say that.
Anyway, not to worry, the net is yeilding some fine answers, like use a win 2000 disk and misc util downloads. So unless anyone has a really helpful answer, thanksSPV and cpjust for looking.

Stupid question time.... have you tried a blank password? Also, how did you used to access this machine? Was it via the Welcome screen? If it was, try typing in the username you used to click on (password should be blank unless you typed one in)

Also, do a search (including in this Windows XP forum) for ERD Commander - this is quite a useful utility. I can't give you any links as things like this get blocked at work ;)
