I am trying to connect to a computer on my LAN using the remote desktop connection program, i have the IP and the local computer name but either will work, does it have to be enabled or something on the remote machine? (I have the administrator account on both machines) Any ideas?

Make sure you have remote desktop turned on, on the machine you want to connect to..... Start -> Control panel -> Performance & Maintenence -> System properties -> Remote Desktop (?) (at work right now). checkmark the remote desktop option.

If it is turned on, the next test is, can you ping the other pc?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

I can ping the PC, i can even see shared folders on it, but even checking the remote assistance option doesnt fix anything. any other ideas?

Um hold on, just thought of something **sheepish grin** would the fact the other PC is XP Home Edition make any difference (forget to mention)?

You can send out invitations for Remote Assistance I believe, but not accept full terminal services/remote desktop connections.

Good call Niphyr, if the PC you want to connect TO runs XP Home the remote desktop is not available.

If the PC is running XP Pro check out this MSKB:

Basically the remote desktop connection runs through IIS and it needs to be setup.

Could you try something like VNC? It's free and works well.

Sorry, but thanks for the votes, and you might try the above suggestion, vnc is a very small package that's easy to use.

itswork,

Just a quibble. Neither the remote desktop client nor Host require IIs.

Best,

I've used VNC before so i spose ill just use that, thought it would be easier if the windows one worked. Thanks all, help is appreciated!

As Matt noted earlier, not under XP Home.
Although XP Home works fine as a client, just not as a Host for a remote sesssion.
