Using IDN printers from a non Micros workstation

Hi all.
Has anyone had success connecting an IDN printer to a non Micros workstation using an FTDI USB to RS-422 adapter?
I cannot get any comms even outside of Micros using Realterm to send a text file to the printer, I've tried different pin out combinations to the terminal block of the adapter but cannot get anything to print. The printer passes its self test with a loopback connected.
