Using Headsets on Avaya Partner 18D phone

Can a headset just be plugged into the headset jack on an avaya/partner 18D phone, or do you really have to buy the amplifier box?

18D's do not have a headset jack.

You will have to use a HEADSET that connects to the HANDSET PORT.

Will the amplifier box be required, or can you just plug in the headset and not use the handset to talk (merely just for taking the line off hook and back on hook again)?
