I would like to use abiword to routinely edit a file that is located on a ftp server. Currently I can do this with openoffice by putting ftp://username@mydomain.com. This trick does not work with abiword. I am using fedora core 3.

Two questions:
1. Is there a way that I can open the remote file directly through abiword.
2. Is there a way that I can mount the remote filesystem to a local directory so that I could open and modify the file as if it were local.

Any help would be appreciated.

As an answer:

1) maybe not. the open dialog from applications, depending what toolkits or something is used they can or cannot open special stuff via the network
2) mounting is possible, for example with lufs ( )

. Mac for productivity
.. Linux for developement [site]
... Windows for solitaire

Does the lufs work under fc3. I thought I read that it was no longer supported and did not work under the 2.6 or later kernel?

You can create a VPN between the boxes using OpenVPN and then open the file using a samba share or an NFS-style remote mount.

If your application isn't smart enough to cope, you're going to have to make the environment meet the application's limitations.
