I was speaking with an administrator a few weeks ago, and he stated he runs "DSREPAIR" (directory services repair) periodically on his servers. He added that it keeps the directory structure very clean. I had never heard of DSREPAIR prior.
Has anyone ever used this command/module on a Novell 4x server? If so, please explain what, if any, may change with NDS. Also, please explain how someone may load this module/service on the server.

Thanks in advance ~

Yes have used it many times. There is a automatic repair mode. If you have a very large volumes ie. more then 10 gigs of used space it could take a while to run. Best to use during slow useage peirods as it will lock Users out. If you have not used it before it could also take a while to clean up your drive. Anyway just "load dsrepair" from the console and select unattended repair thats it.
p.s. ever use vrepair?
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have used vrepair before. DSREPAIR must be similar? Does this work on 3x or 5x servers? Or can you only use this after you patch the server?

Thanks ~

I know that 5.x has it, just Don't remember 3.x. Do you realy have 3.x still?

No. . . only work with 4x & 5x. I'm planning on running this DSREPAIR on Monday on one of our 4.11 servers. Hopefully, all will go well.

Thanks again ~

It is a good idea to run dsrepair weekly. If you have a time when user are off your network.
What is difference between DSREPAIR and VRePair? In additional with DSREPAIR, is there other module to help to maintain server?
Thanks

Vrepair is a utility to repair damaged volumes. Will load itself if it detects a damaged volume. The only other time I use it is when I am upgrading to a newer version of the operationg system. To make sure that the volumes are in good shape.
Dsrepair is a utility to repair and cleanup your NDS tree. I run it once a month because it is the only time I have the system to myself. I also use it when I am adding a new server to the tree.

An other utility I use on a regular basis is Filer. This is used to recover deleted files and to purgre the deleted files. In order to know when to run the purge I use the utility Servman. This gives you the free limbos and you can figure out the ratio of free space to free limbo blocks.
