I have set up windows 2003 dhcp and dns on one server. It is assigning IP's and and DNS.

I disabled DHCP on my Westell 6100 Modem. The VC Settings are set for a static ip and as a routed bridge.

The server, workstations, and the westell modem are plugged directly into the switch.

my network is under 10.0.0.x

Problem: Westell only will share the internet if you reconfigure the ip dns to 192.168.1.1.

I have two nic cards in my server. i tried setting one to the internet settings and the other to distribute the ips and rules on the card i assigned to the internet, i set it to share but it only works on the server and none of the workstations.

Long story short, how do i share the dsl with all the computers. I have a static IP.

i dont understand what you are trying to do on your network. why 2 nics in the server, you trying to run ics on the server? what is the ip on the 2nd interface in the server? what is your gateway address? you using dns forwarders?

I'm trying to share my internet with the rest of the computers.

Like i said, DHCP is turned off on the Westell Modem. Right now the only way they can access the internet is if I assign the modems gateway and dns (192.168.1.1). I'm not sure how to set up the forwarder. The 2 nics were already in server. I thought they may be necessary to share the dsl connection. I want my server to have control over internet access. right now if a workstation signs on the result would be something like this:

10.0.0.15
subnet:255.0.0.0
gateway:10.0.0.1
DHCP Server:10.0.0.2
DNS Server: 10.0.0.2

if the dsl modem were assigning the working internet connection it would be something like this:
192.168.1.45
subnet:255.255.255.0
Gateway:192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
DNS Server: 192.168.1.1

the top is what i have my server assigning. I'm not sure how to foward the dns or gateway to make it work. i thought about putting it behind a firewall/router.. same problem would happen?

ok before i start. my dsl is static ip. so it gave me a warning on the microsoft website, do not use on a network that has static ip. is that just referring to my servers ip?

only reason i can think of that they would say that is if your LAN pcs are static and you setup dhcp you could run in to ip conflicts if you didnt setup the dhcp scope correctly. so im sure that warning applies to LAN PCs not your internet address.

It would just be easier and simpler to buy a router disable any DHCP on the router. I dont really see the point of putting an internet connection through a server like that, if the server is to crash or have problems than you lose the internet connection as if you where using a router you would still be able to use the internet if needs be.

If your looking for something cheap and cheerful then get something like a netgear router, if you want something more powerful then maybe Cisco 87x series or 180x series for something higher up but prolly more than you would need.

Make sure DNS server is running on your server configure DHCP for the network range you want, then make sure you have DNS forwarders setup on the DNS server to point to your ISP DNS servers or some large public DNS servers.

It's all pretty much for eduacation. I want the internet to come in through this server and out to the workstations. (there's not many).

DHCP is disabled on the modem. But it will still only let you communicate with it if you are in the 192.168.1.* scope.

I'm trying to change me scope so those ip's are assigned but it won't let me out of 255.0.0.0 subnet on the scope properties.

Oh another thing is you trying to run ICS on a server running DHCP or DNS you will most like run into problems, as ICS acts as a mini DHCP/DNS server.

If you want to have the setup like this then you are going to have to use something like RRAS todo the routing and nating for you.
