Using an asterix to mark a word as bold

Does anyone know how to turn the functionality of automatically rendering text bold when putting an asterix at the start and end? E.g. *Dave*

I need to use a barcode font and barcode readers use the * to denote the start and end of a barcode.

Tools > AutoCorrect Options...

AutoFormat As You Type tab.
