Management pulled out an old tape with a user's profile that was on a tape created in 8.0 or 8.2... We have 11d...

How would I go about getting perticular data off this?

I am new to veritas and could use some help.

Thank you,

I don't know if 11d is backward compatible to 8.x, I guess you would just have to try to catalog the tape to see what happens.

If it were me however, I would find an old workstation setting around and install the BE 8.x on it as a standalone setup. Then catalog the old tapes and copy off the necessary information to thumb drive or something. But that's just me.

Regards,
David.

Hi Madlife,

Did you find out if this worked?

I'm installing a new server tomorrow with 11d, and restoring from their old server tapes - which used 8.60...!

Hmmm... maybe I'm best installing 8.60 on the new 2K3 box (if it's compatible!), get the data restored, then upgrade to 11d from that?

Cheers, Mark

The 8.6 will work on a 2K3 server although Veratas says is doesn't. I had it running for a short period of time before upgrading to 10d. Our 11d is on an x64 2K3 server and I wouldn't bet on backward compatibility of the tapes as nothing else seems to be.

Regards,
David

You can catalog a 8.0 tape in any version of BE. You just can catalog an 11d tape in lower version.

I was able to inventory it, but when i went to catalog it, it prompted me for a password. Since I havent been here very long, I called up the last system admin, who does not know the password... so right now im stuck. But it does appear to be able to read it.

That password will be either the system administrator password or the BE account password. I use the Sys Admin password for everything.

Unless you have changed the passwords or your predecessor changed them before he left then they should be the same as they were.

NO that password can be anything. In 8.0 you had to specify that password in the job and it could be completley different from sys admin or BE account.

I would start looking at disabling BE services and load the oem driver and catalog it with NTBACKUP. I have seen rare cases you can get the information of the tape but otherwise without the passoword your not going to get anything off that tape unless you send it to recovery services.
