using a concatenated string as a value

Hi,
tough one to eplain this.
right, we have one XL workbook that is summing the values of cells in a lot of other workbooks. Using the concatenation function we can get the string of the needed workbook.sheet.cell.value but the string is... just a string, how do we get XL to use that string as an actual reference to a cell and display the value?
make sense?
any takers?

use the indirect function
=INDIRECT(string range ref)
will give the value that is in the range that the string indicates Rgds

cheers pal, that worked.
but the sheets have to be open when the reference is made?
its round about but it works which is the main thing.
going to make a database out of the sheets i think, then we wouldnt have to do all this linking nonsense.
