Users get disconnected from Server Shares 1

I have a server (running server 2000) that acts as the data share, I also have a back up server (pc with server 2000) that DFS stopped working awhile back and is basically acting as a print server right now.

The problem is; my users are constantly being disconnected from the shared folders on the main server. The only way I can give them access to the folders again is to reboot the back up server. I have to do this about a dozen times a day. It's been happening for a couple of weeks now and I can't figure it out.

Anyone ever have this happen and if so, how did you correct the problem? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not so concerned about the DFS right now, what I need is continued access to the shared folders on the main server without having to always reboot the backup server. If you have any idea why this is happening, I would really appreciate it.

I think Mark's point is the DFS that has failed may be causing the issues. Disable DFS on the servers (since it's not working) and see if that resolves the issue you're having.

It's still doing it after removing DFS.
Note: the shares are and always have been share as for example: \MainDC\Shared Folder#1 or \BackDC\Shared Folder#2, it was never shared using the DFS (by the way, I inherited this setup).

It's strange, because one minute they have access to the shared folder and later on they don't have access, being the admin, I have had it happen to me a couple of times also.

Now, since yesterday morning, I have had 2 users unable to access the network period from their pc and when I logged on as administrator, it too would not let me in.

Sounds to me like you might be having a network issue. Have you looked into that possibility?

We've seen similiar problems like you describe when a fiber module was going out on one of our backbone switches. We didn't track it down until we reset the switch in question and that module didn't come back up.

That port was going up and down.

Do you have any network monitoring tools to help you track down if you're having network issues?

Well, one thing you could do to track down a possible network issue, is take someone's laptop who is having the trouble, and take it into the same server room where the server in question is. Hook up the same switch that the servers are on, and see if you're still having the problem with disconnecting shares. If not, then you know for sure it could be a network issue outside of your server room.

You could then do a process of elimination from there, by visiting other switches, or switching closets, and performing the same tests. If you're having network issues, this should help you narrow down where the trouble might be.

If you still have the same problem even inside the server room, then you may consider resetting the switch in there. Then try testing again. If you still have the problem, try moving the server to a different port on the switch. If you are still having this problem, try using a different switch all together. If you still have the problem, then it may be something with your domain, or a setting on the file server itself, that is causing the shares to time-out.

Our shares disconnect after a timeout of inactivity. I don't know where this setting is, but the shares reconnect automatically when the user starts using the share again. Perhaps someone here knows where this timeout setting is and how to check it or adjust it.
