Hello,
I've got a NT Server that holds both a Quicken Expensable database and TestTrack Pro database. The problem I'm having is that users are not being disconnected from the server properly when they log out of each program. In order to resolve this problem, I use Server Manager to manually disconnect a user from the server. Afterward, they can log into the database again. Because both programs are responding similarly, I think that it's a problem with my NT Server. Any suggestions? I have service pack 6a installed on the server.

Thanks

This sounds similar to a problem we have with a software suite we use called Marketron2000. What we learned is that if the user exits the program using the "X" in the upper right hand corner, it may not actually disconnect from the network. To eliminate the hassles of daily manual disconnects, we ask our users to use File>Exit whenever possible. If I notice the network acting sluggishly, I then check the Server Manager for excessive connect/idle times.

tkmac,
thanks for the ideas but it seems as though people are closing out of the programs properly as you suggested already. this is why my situation seems so bizarre. I guess I was looking to see if there was a service in windows that might control database connections.

Beagle,

I'll do some checking about any services that might be causing that. Though, just to let you know, when we were having the problem, almost everyone said they were exitng the programs properly. I decided to make it a focus for about a month, to the point it became a bit of a running joke around the offices. Strangely enough, the problem slowly diminished...
I'll let you know if I learn anything more about services causing the prob.

Hey Beagle...

Shot in the dark, but this could also be contributing to the problem...

Microsoft pulls security patch that crashes NT 4.0

(snipped)
The patch, released on Dec. 11, 2002, is to fix a privilege elevation vulnerability deemed "important" by Microsoft. A malicious user could gain administrative privileges on a system by exploiting a flaw in the WM_TIMER Windows function, Microsoft said in security bulletin MS02-071 (
However, some system administrators were confronted with random crashes and reboots on their NT 4.0 systems after installing the patch. The problem was solved by removing the patch, according to postings about the issue in online discussion groups.

Also, one user complained of trouble using Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server. When a user was signed off using Terminal Server Administrator, their processes showed as still running. This was also resolved by removing the security patch.
