Hi Guys,

We have moved from Digital Avaya 2030 to IP 9608 handsets.

Some users are complaining that the call internal and external call quality isn't as crisp and fluid as the digital handsets. We haven't change provider, still using ISDN30.

Are there any changes we can make to improve the call quality?

thanks

What codec are you using for calls?
Should be G.711.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Please see screenshot of current settings. I'm not familiar with this config.

Look in System Status on the extension during a call and you'll see which of the codecs it's using.

I usually don't have G.729a selected in my systems since I don't want it to be used.

Call quality is totally dependant on the network it runs on, once it's on the best codec that's the system out of the loop with any issue you have :)

Hi

The system status is showing codec G711 A. Is this the best codec for quality?

See screenshot below.

We are using 1GB Netgear Prosafe POE switches. Is it recommended to configure QOS for voice?

G711 is the best yes.

Qos is only really required on larger networks and/or high use networks, though many will advise otherwise (usually to sell more expensive switches/services to you that you aren't able to self manage).

I have seen sites with no Qos and 200 devices on the network linked via multiple switches and fibres etc, call quality was top notch. I've seen sites where IT go crazy and add VLANs for everything and claim Qos is setup when there is only 30 - 40 devices and quality has been crap.

But it's the network that effects quality in 99.9% of cases.

Having said that. I would wager that the quality is as good as they'll get though, older digital phones just had better quality components then newer Avaya IP phones. So the loss is not at network/system level, perhaps no loss, it's just not as good leaving the source and lower quality speakers at the end :)

G722 for set-to-set calls actually provides the best quality. Also make sure that you are using direct media path to remove any additional transcoding.

Try the handset of one of the old digital sets and let them try that.
You will hear the difference and you cannot do anything about it.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

Careful with G722, seen a number of Combo card VCMs where using it gives silent calls :)
