User unable to open Word doc from hyperlink

I have a very basic set of pages designed to allow access to multiple Word documents for basic info tracking. It seems to work fine on many workstations, but I have one that will not open the files. The only error it gets is an exclamation point in a yellow triangle. I've checked access rights and the user is able to browse to the file on the network and open it. I'm assuming it's a setting in Internet Explorer, but I'm not able to track it down. Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Probably a dumb question, but does the problem workstation have Word installed on it?

Try setting the user's security and advanced settings to default under tools-internet options.
