User rights

I have set up a small network with win2k using active directory, when I created my users I used the default user group. The users can not change some computer settings,like power saver, and the time on the clock. How do I allow them to make those changes without giving them administrative rights.?

Your problem is at the workstation level. The user needs to have Power User rights on the workstation. Under control panel, go to users and then see how that user is set up. To change their rights, you need to be administrator or have adminstrator rights at that workstation.

Ampal,

Open a GPO...Under Computer Configuration|Windows Settings|Security Settings|Local Policies|User Rights Assignment...Then, dbl-click 'Change the System Time' and add the users or groups that you would like to allow this right to.

You may want to re-think giving all users the ability to change the system time because if your client's clocks become skewed from the server, you will run into problems.


Not sure about Power Options.

That's a good suggestion Vhaggar!

However Power Users may have more rights than he may want to allow...

Keep in mind that,

Power Users can:

1. Run legacy applications in addition to Windows 2000 certified applications.
2. Install programs that do not modify operating system files or install system services.
3. Customize system-wide resources including Printers, Date/Time, Power Options, and other Control Panel resources.
4. Create and manage local user accounts and groups.
5. Stop and start system services which are not started by default.

If all the rights agree with what you need, Power Users is the ticket for you!

Why don't you just let the server update the clients clocks at logon thru a netlogon file.
This will make sure everyone on the network is using the same time on their clients.
