i am trying to change user profiles so that the user can specify the password they want. I have a nt 4 pdc and bdc. the current user profile settings are - "pass never expires", a few have - "user cannot change pass" When i clear everything out and only select "user must change pass at nest logon" the user is prompted to change password but then when they try to enter it it says they do not have permission to change the password. What's going on here? The clients are running win2k. Thanks for the help

If you make any changes to user profiles make sure you either force the PDC & BDC to synchronise or allow time to synchronise before attempting to log the user on.

i thought this mught be an issue. i did not know that i could force the replication. how do you do that?

Hi

Server Manager
Computer
Synchronize Entire Domain

ok, there is something else wierd going on here because its not working. same message when i force the synch. I even have left an account alone for a whole day and it still gev me the "you do not have permissions to change the password." I'm not sure what else i can do. please help.

Win2k workstations also have rights. How are the usres set up on the workstations? Are you going to the correct domain? Win2k can be tricky even on the workstations. Just for fun sign on as administrator on a workstation and change the user to have administrative rights then try the procedure.

Hi

You need to go to User Manager, and in thier change click on Policy - Accounts
One of the last options at the bottom of the screen, is
"user must logon to change password", make sure this is unchecked...
