hi,
can i login as root in my ftp client in windows machine?
i'm using ws_ftp pro. i can't login as root.
when i login as normal user, i cant also delete files/folder in my /home/myfolder
what i should do to enable me to have full authorization to make changes?

hi!
you could try to add a particular user to the "wheel" group....that would give him root privileges...the rest of the users, however, should not be allowed to access any other directory other than their home directory(chroot)
hope this helps

wat is wheel group? how to add to wheel group?

okay you do have a redhat server running somewhere right !
then if you look into the /etc/group file you would see a group listed there with a GID of 10 called the wheel group and it is assigned to root also....this allows you to give root privileges to other users...just as you give administrator rights in windowsNT/2000 etc...

to add a user to wheel group you modify their gid
usermod -g wheel username

hope this helps

Hi,

You probably can't login as root because of restrictions in the relevant pam file - /etc/pam.d/ftp (or maybe /etc/pam.d/wu-ftpd) or perhaps more simply because root is listed in /etc/ftpusers. The latter file contains a list of users who cannot use ftp . In fact, you could also prevent root by having a 'deny-uid' statement in the main ftp config file, /etc/ftpaccess .

The 'delete' problem is probably becasue you need to have a statement in /etc/ftpaccess that permits such operation. For example, the following allows for 'real' users - i.e. conventional linux logons (vs guest /anon ):

delete yes real
overwrite yes real

Hope this helps
