We are running XP Home and having trouble with the user accounts accessing the internet and some programs. We also have AVG for anti-virus and firewall and Registry Patrol. We selected these two because they did allow the other users to access the internet when we loaded them. Now we can't get the other accounts internet access at all. We have restored to previous days, which helped once or twice, but now we can't even find a day to restore to that allows them access.

On the administrator account we are running fine. Very fine in fact. We are pleased with AVG and the speed of the computer itself. But we would much rather the kids could access their accounts and not have to use ours for the internet.

Any ideas what could be knocking out the internet access on the other accounts? We tried a couple other anti-virus/firewall softwares and we couldn't get the other accounts access at all. I've searched the help files and online and can't find an answer.

Thank you.

What exactly is happening? Is IE just showing page can not be displayed? Is it timing out on the web pages? What kind of connection do you have? Any more info about this would be helpful, thanks.

Have a look at Greg PALMER's free program, see if you can make use of that?

294676 - HOW TO: Enable and Use the "Run As" Command When Running Programs in Windows

"To start a program as an administrator" in the Help and Support program.

Other things you could look at are installing the programs in each users Document and Settings folder (done while temporarily promoting the user to an Administrator just for the install).

What browser are you using? Do they have E-mail access?
Have you tried cleaning out the User's Temporary Internet Files folder and other Temp files?

PC applications & utilities: Beware of Registry Patrol

Thank you for your help. The web browser says "page cannot be displayed" and "you might not be connected", but the computer definitely is. We have broadband, a new one today, and it is reacting the same as the one we switched from, which was also broadband. I don't know if they can access email, as they all use webbased email, not Outlook.

You could try signing in your limited users while booted to Safe Mode with Networking to see if they have access then. To get them able to sign in you will need to press Ctrl+Alt+Del at the Welcome Screen and type their username in to the classic logon box.

Linney,

We tried the login as you described. Nothing changed. Same response. Thank you for your help.

See if the Help and Support's "Diagnose network configuration and run automated networking tests" is of any use. Run it as a Limited and as Administrator user (twice that is).

I found this and started into it and it asks if you can browse from the host and client computers. We aren't on a network, just different users on one computer. Does the term network ever apply within one computer? All the help seems to be for sharing a connection between computers. We just want to share the internet connection between our users.

Thanks for your patience and help.

If you’re having problems connecting to web sites, news groups, or E-mail, click Diagnose network configuration and run automated networking tests, then click Scan your system. This option runs a series of tests and presents the results.

Don't worry about terms like Network, it is only the actual Scan that runs if you are clicking on the correct link, this Scan will check you connectivity with your ISP and pass or fail you on certain tests. This will then give you a clue as to where to look for problems.

One problem solved, and thank you for the ideas. I still don't know why it's happening, but when the limited users cannot access the internet, IE7 has a "diagnose connection problem" in the tools menu. This starts up and finds a problem with Winsoc and after a restart we are good again.

Thanks everyone.
