I have 'borrowed' the icons from SHELL32.DLL for use as button graphics on my VFP app.

Is it legal for me to do this?

All your users have Windows so they've all got these icons in the DLL on their PCs. You could write a routine to extract the image from the DLL at runtime and I presume that that would be OK. You however are supplying a different (but apparently identical) image from your own copy of the same DLL.

Lawyers could get rich on a question like this.

They have!

After reading the section titled "Distributable and Restricted Visual FoxPro Features and Files" in the VFP help, I know as much now as I did an hour ago.

Please let me know if the suggestion(s) I provide are helpful to you.

o oh, looks like we could have fun on this one!!

To complicate things more, the are 48x48 icons that I am turning into BMPs and some text to it and then using them for buttons! So would that constitute a different image?

Plus does this icon set only reside in XP (which I am developing on)??

Anyone know of any good graphic artists...!?

Thanks Craig! If IconCool can 'borrow' them and redistribute them then I guess I am OK!

I spent a lot of time looking for icons before I went down this route, but the ones I wanted that I found had to be paid for!

sorted!

Visual Studio 2005 ships with the new icons that you can redistribute. I assume they come with the Express version...and it's currently a free beta.

If you have a budget, here are some sources of gorgeous icons:

StockIcons.com was suggested by Jos Pols on the UT who recently posted some nice screen shots of his application on the thread "Writing sexy marketable interfaces". Craig has great screen post there as well.

If you have VFP9, check PNGs image libraries from Linux world. You can find a lot which are free, specially themes (KDE,Gnome).
PNG graphics are nice on buttons, because built in transparency.
