Use wifi status change to launch script

I need to solve a problem and someone on another forum suggested I check here.

I may need to use the wifi status on a laptop to launch a script. The laptop has a VPN client on it and also has a Sprint card. If the user moves from a Sprint coverage area to a wifi area or vice versa, the VPN will break because his IP address changed.

It would be really cool if we could detect a change in status on the wifi card and then use that to run a script that restarts the VPN client automatically. We're trying to make this as transparent as possible for the users.

Any ideas?

Perhaps if you can make the script work, you could set it up to run as a periodic task to check the status and initiate some action if needed.
