Use nice FQDNs for teamsites

I have one Sharepoint server which is hosting multiple teamsites. For example:
-

http://server1/Teamsite1

-

http://server1/Teamsite2

What I would like to do is give the user a nice FQDN to connect to the site. For example teamsite1.domain.com and teamsite2.domain.com. Does anyone have an idea how to do this??

Hello,

Create a host record in your DNS and then you can use hosthearders in your IIS (website) configuration, that is the way I have setup one of our environemnts.

Example how we have done: In the DNS create a CNAME host record teamsite1.domain.com and point it to your server1 name. Then in the IIS on the website chose properties and add teamsite1.domain.com in the hostheader field for yout teamsite1 name.

Adding an HostHeader name to a site unfortunately does not work. The only thing your achieve is that the site can also be reached in the added name. What I would like is that a FQDN points to a subsite instead of a IIS virtual server. For example:

When I connect to the url

http://teamsite1.domain.com

I am connected to the site

http://server1.domain.com/teamsite1.

And when I connect to the url

http://teamsite2.domain.com

I am connected to the site

http://server1.domain.com/teamsite2.

Ok then I missunderstood you..sorry. You will still have to do this through the DNS then I guess. But I am not sure that you in the DNS can actually point it to a specfic subsite, you might have to put up a redirection page in the IIS.

I usually create the DNS record before I create the sites, so I have not come across your exact scenario, and I only point to a toplevel site and not a subsite.

It should not be that hard to solve, will look into it a little.

I also thought about a redirect, but then with an ASPX script:

- Create an extra Virtual Server to which I assign all host header names.
- Within this site I create a default aspx file in which I check the hostheader name and based on that redirect the user to the correct teamsite.
