There was once a man painting a sign for the "Pig and Whistle" and another man came up and said "I think there should be more space between pig and and and and and whistle."

I can't see the point of using white-boxes for something that can't sensibly be guessed.

It's the nature of this forum to put answers in a white-only code box. I prefer it that way, and so do other participants. I'm sorry that it's frustrating to you.

I don't think GwydionM misunderstands the purpose of the code boxes, or is frustrated at their use.

I think he or she is saying that a newcomer to the forum can't always sensibly guess that a blank box labeled "CODE" is intended as a spoiler-guard. That's misleading and counterintuitive, and if it's a common problem, something should be done about it.

One solution to this problem would be to do as you (ESquared) suggested and put a visible label at the top of "spoiler" boxes. There are others, as well.

I am not the administrator of this forum. This thread was originally in another forum (mine, but now defunct) which was merged with this one earlier this year. You'll need to consult the new forum administrator to discover any policies about hiding answers.

Perhaps the web site owners could offer some sort of solution as well. The burden of making a forum a nice place to be lies not only with those given certain privileges of use but also with those who are in control of the programming that drives it.

How about a set of tags, something like [hidden Answer][/hidden], which automatically hides the contents and looks something like

Answer (select the following text to make it visible)

followed by that legendary white box, where the word Answer comes from the first tag.

Only the unvirtuous can be dutiful, for the virtuous already perform duty's requirements by inclination and for pleasure. Where there is no pain, no disinclination, there is no duty.

Chipper & Erik,

As one who still struggles not to think himself a "newbie," I sympathize with those who in fact are. I like the idea of the "hidden answer" code.

THanks,
Tim

Specialized tags would indeed be a good solution.

I wasn't suggesting any kind of administrative work on your part (even if it were possible); I was just referring to this earlier suggestion by you:

I propose we start using the boxes as follows:

Code:
Select this box to view my hidden answer
[COLOR=white]This is my hidden answer.[/color]

I do apologize for replying to this recently dug-up thread, however. I didn't dig it up, but I hadn't noticed that the reply before mine was so far out of sync.

The words beiginning with as were troublesome, so I moved on to bs and got 5 bobs in a row, (Beachboys style)
Code:
[COLOR=#FFFFFF]"Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob and Anne";-)[/color]

Code:
[COLOR=#ffffff]I'm still looking for the original reference to this, he was a stand-up[/color]
