There was once a man painting a sign for the "Pig and Whistle" and another man came up and said "I think there should be more space between pig and and and and and whistle."

There are a couple of these that use the word 'that' multiple times in succession (warning, these are grammatically correct, but sometimes difficult to parse). For those that want to try anf figure out long sequnces of 'that' for themselves, I'll put the two I know in a code box:
Code:
[white]
He said that that that that that man used was wrong.
Did the editor know that, that that that that that that followed was redundant?
[/white]

And for you programmers:

If you AND 'and' and 'AND' and AND 'AND' and 'and', it is not the same as when you OR 'or' or 'OR' or OR 'OR' or 'or'. Is that not logically, syntactically, and linguistically correct?

When I got to the or's, I felt as though I were imitating a seal! Very nice, Mufasa, I got a good laugh out of that. Strongm, perhaps you can tell me why in this forum all the windows that say code have nothing in them??

Bob

P. s. Here's one from German:
Wenn hinter Fliegen Fliegen fliegen, fliegen Fliegen Fliegen nach.

(If flies fly behind flies, then flies fly after flies.)

Bob,

The reason that the windows in this forum appear empty is because we have set the option to be "white-on-white" inside the windows so that if someone is posting an answer to a WordPlay game, and someone else doesn't want to see the answer yet, the text will be invisible by default. If you wish to see what is inside a window box, then just "sweep" the box with your cursor as though you were going to copy the text, and then the text will become visible for you.

Cheers, Bob.

Q: Well Will, will Will will Will well?
A: Yes, Will will will Will to will Will well, while Will will will Will well as well.

(assumes Will has two relatives named Will and I am speaking to another Will altogether)

Arguments about marking a student's essey.

John, who according to the teacher had had 'had', had had 'had had - 'had had' being the correct answer.

Such fun. :)

Thanks for your help, Mufasa. Now, if someone could tell me how to put code windows in a post, I believe I would be all set.

I propose we start using the boxes as follows:

Code:
Select this box to view my hidden answer
[white]This is my hidden answer.[/white]

@Gwydion:
I know it like this (even worse):
Code:
[COLOR=white white]Where John had had 'had', and Mike had had 'had had', 'had had' had had the teacher's approval.[/color]

- Giving birth is having a child.
- Having someone else give birth for you would be having a child had.
- Having done this in the past would mean you had had the child had.
- If this child had no breakfast, and it was in the past, then he was in the state of having had no breakfast. So,

The child the parents had had had had had no breakfast.

Code:
Think I got it..[white]Think I got it.[/white]
Thanks!

It's supposed to be invisible until you highlight it. To give people the chance to work on the problem without accidentally seeing the answer.

I can't see the point of using white-boxes for something that can't sensibly be guessed.

Note that it's just as easy to hit Ctrl-A as select the box with your cursor.

GwydionM,

The challenge was to use the same word many times in a row in a sentence. If someone desired to do this without interference, he might be disappointed to see "had had had had" out of the corner of his eye, as it is a big hint about one way to get the job done. Putting it in white protects this person from accidental knowledge.

It's the nature of this forum to put answers in a white-only code box. I prefer it that way, and so do other participants. I'm sorry that it's frustrating to you.

Frustrating to you, too?

What if we make a new rule that the original poster may ask for answers hidden or not hidden? (But if there is no request, the default will be hidden.)

No, not frustrating to me too, I'm sorry too. :)
