I have a 3 comp network in my home . Server has 2 nics and is set to dsl modem , the other 2 comps are hooked up thru a hub to the other nic . I was told that if I used a switch in place of a hub that the other 2 comps would not have to share bandwidth and would both get full bandwidth to each . My question is , is that true ?
BTW thx for all response to other post about networking . I have it up and running :-> .

First all the DSL data has to come though one wire to the first PC, so a switch will not speed up DSL access, if that is the question

For File sharing between the 3 PCs there will be some speedup, but unless file transfer is happening between all three PCs at the same time, a hub will not be much slower.

A Switch is a better device than a hub, but unless you have continuos traffic (LAN Games?) between all 3 PCs I am not sure you will see a difference

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thx for your reponse . I do use my lan for games ;-), and would there be enough difference in speed to make the change in your opinion and would it make any difference for playing online games as far as speed goes ?

I never play games so I have no direct experience, but if the Game Server is on DSL no, if it is local to your LAN, yes it will speed up some.

should you invite 20 folks over for LAN games THEN switches are important

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thx again and I don`t think my wife would like 20 gamers in her house all at once ;-) lol

I've gamed with an LPT1 cable and it was fine.

HUB - broadcasts the data to all the ports all the time
SWITCH - Broadcass to all port til it gets a response and then sets a path between.

You can have a 24 port Swicth for $99 dollars now adays
You can get GigaBit 8 ports for a little more

I have Gigabit in some parts of my house via direct connects and love it..

But Jim is right...you wont notice and increase in anything with just a couple of PCs in the house..

Wait till you have a server room in your house...

PS:My wife call my PC my Mistress
Now it more like a Harem
